Residents of Gatuanyaga, in Thika East Sub-County have been advised to take advantage of the ongoing rains to plant bananas in a bid to increase food security in the area.
Speaking on Sunday during a church service at Gatuanyaga ACK Church, Gatuanyaga MCA, Cecilia Wamaitha said that bananas would continue to do well even after the rains are over.
"Residents should ensure they plant at least twenty banana suckers in their farms. This will ensure that we do not experience a food shortage,” said Wamaitha.
The MCA said she was planning to take a motion to the county assembly that would see the county government of Kiambu support banana farmers.
"We need a legislation that puts emphasis on banana farming. Such a legislation would help farmers in terms of research, production and even marketing of bananas,” she said.
Wamaitha said that commercialisation of banana farming would make it a viable venture to residents which would ensure a regular supply of food and income in the area.
Wamaitha said that the county government is obliged to support the farmers in dry areas to produce food crops that do well in such regions.
