The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Gatundu branch Executive Secretary John Macharia has reiterated that teachers in the area will not resume teaching till their demands are met.
Speaking to journalists at Gatundu North on Monday, Macharia said that Knut will not relent in pushing for their rights.
“Teachers have constitutional rights to push for their rights, we need to have our rights and the government should honour their promise, it is long overdue,” said Macharia.
The unionist argued that the government is not committed to negotiations that are intended to give a comprehensive offer to teachers.
“The government has shown little interest in addressing teachers' demands, so the only option left is to down our tools,” added Macharia.
He further accused Sara Serem-led Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) for deterring their effort to strike a deal with the government.
“Salaries and Remuneration Commission has turned down our offer for salaries increments, and we insist that this is something that we need to discuss to find a solution,” said Macharia.
However, Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has warned the striking teachers to respect the rule and noted that there is a court order temporarily restraining teachers from downing their tools.
Knut is demanding an increase in basic salary between 180-200 percent, house allowance by 50 percent, responsibility allowance for head teachers and their deputies and hardship allowances among others.
The union issued a strike notice on December 27 2014, in an annual delegates' conference at Kasarani, Nairobi, after accusing the government and Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for failing to address their demands.
