Gatundu North MP Kigo Njenga has appealed to the National Hospital insurance Fund management to revise the increased monthly rates, terming it as unfair to the low income earners. Speaking on Tuesday in Gatundu, Kigo said that the new rates are sidelining the largest group of Kenyans which falls at the category of low and medium income earners' bracket. “I would like to remind them that most Kenyans cannot afford the high rates imposed on them. Raising the rates to Sh 500 means that only a few can afford it. Let it remain at Sh160 so that even that lady who sells groceries in her small store can afford to pay,” he said. He also blamed the top echelons for allegedly overlooking the need to satisfactorily consult the public while hiking the rates which in return affect them. He has therefore appealed to them to reverse the move to strike effectiveness in payment of their health pension scheme. Meanwhile, he has criticised Raila’s call for demonstrations to push for a referendum. He accused the ODM leader of practising double standards since he was a senior government official when the constitution was passed. “Raila’s call for push for a referendum is tantamount to asking Kenyans if they are ready to be involved in running battles with the police. We need a peaceful country and Kenyans will not be divided by protests calling for some changes that are long overdue and bypassed by time. What we need is building the country,” he said.
