Speaking to reporters in her Gatundu Town office on Monday, Gatundu South Sub-County Agribusiness Development officer Joyce Njau, noted that the area was good for agriculture yet many farmers were not taking farming seriously.

"We have realised that many farmers in this area are in farming either because there is nothing else for them to do or they are doing it as a part-time activity,” said Njau.

Njau said that agriculture was the key driver to the economy of the area and the county as a whole adding that it is only serious farming that will ensure growth of the local economy.

She stated that the area that is dominated by small-scale farmers had the potential to become a food basket for the entire county if the farmers were motivated and trained on good agricultural practices.

"Not many farmers who are in the sector know the do's and don'ts of the trade. We need to train them on how to go about profitable farming,” she said.
