The Garissa Water and Sewerage Company (GAWASCO) has allayed fears of an outbreak of waterborne diseases after a sewer line in the town broke down.
Gawasco managing director, Abdi Haji, said the water company had disinfected all towns to avoid future disease outbreaks.
Mr Haji further said the water company is moving with speed to ensure the damaged sewer is repaired.
He confirmed that the firm was working round the clock to repair the system in order to prevent a health hazard from developing.
“The sewer system was constructed in 1980. The population has grown since then and is overwhelming the system. We need to overhaul the system. We are also trying to unblock sewers,” the managing director said.
The pollution caused by the damaged sewer had affected hundreds of families living around Garissa as some were forced to vacate their houses.
The residents say that their children are at a risk since they innocently play with the unclean water and the sewerage that is leaking.
Small businesses are also on the verge of closing down because of the unpleasant odour emanating from the raw sewage.
