The Garissa Water and Sewerage Company (GAWASCO) has denied closing down premises of car wash owners in the county.
GAWASCO public relations officer Ali Awdol said the water company only disconnected illegal water tapping which was being used by some of the car owners.
Speaking in Garissa town, Mr. Awdol said it is illegal for business owners to connect to water supply without the company’s authorization.
“Some unscrupulous business owners have been engaging in illegal water connection. We carried out an exercise to disconnect all illegal water tapping by the car wash companies,” he said.
The public relations officer denied claims by the car owners that the water company was discriminating against them after it failed to close petrol stations that engage in the car wash business.
According to Mr. Awdol, petrol station owners in the county had complied with all requirements and that’s why their car wash operations were not affected.
“All the affected businesses will be required to apply for new licenses. Some that have complied with all requirements are operating.”
“The crackdown on illegal water tapping in the county will continue as we seek to bring sanity to the water sector,” added Mr. Awdol.
The car wash owners had protested the decision by the county government to close down their premises.
