Seven Members of the county assembly have threatened to lead demonstrations in the streets of Nakuru should the Geothermal Development Company (GDC) fail to engage them when hiring people for work on the Menengai Caldera.
The MCAS are led by Peter Nderitu, Esther Mengere and Eunice Mureithi- Viwandani. They have accused GDC of failing to honour the agreement between the GDC and the MCAs to work out the modalities of hiring workers to perform various duties.
“In Menengai alone 166 people were employed in the month of October, out of which none was from the surrounding areas while earlier on the GDC had promised to allocate 70% of the job slots to the locals,” said Nderitu.
In the last three months, more than five demonstrations have been held in Rongai and Bahati following the move by GDC to employ ‘outsiders’ at the expense of the locals.
The MCAs now want the GDC managing director Dr. Silas Simiyu probed, saying that those “well connected” often make their way to the company and secure job opportunities for relatives and friends.
The GDC Nakuru branch manager could not be reached for comment, but the GDC communications department has however indicated that consultations about the issue are at occurring at an advanced level.
