The National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) has welcomed the nominations of new members to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

President Uhuru Kenyatta nominated six commissioners and a chairman to the IEBC, following a vigorous vetting process. 

"We note with appreciation that the composition of the new team adheres to the not more than two thirds gender principle pursuant to Article 27 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010,'' said NGEC chairperson Winfred Lichuma.

She further commended the recruitment panel for the gender responsive shortlist.

"We thank the recruitment panel for the gender responsive shortlist. We wish to commend H.E President Kenyatta for demonstrating his faith in men and women to steer the electoral process,'' Lichuma said, Friday.

President Kenyatta nominated advocate Wanyonyi Wafula Chebukati as the new IEBC chairman, to succeed Ahamed Isack Hassan.

Nominated commissioners include; Consolata Bucha, Boya Molu, Roselyn Akombe, Paul Kurgat, Margaret Mwachanya and Abdi Guliye.

Their names were forwarded to parliament for vetting.

''Lastly we wish the team success with parliamentary vetting process which we hope can be fast tracked to enable timely preparations for election,'' added the NGEC chairperson.
