Gender Affairs Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki has lauded a decision by a Nairobi court to sentence three men to death for sexually assaulting and violently robbing a female passenger in Githurai in 2014.
Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi on Wednesday directed bus driver Nicholas Chege, his conductor Meshack Mburu and petrol station attendant Edward Ndung’u to face death for the offense which he describes as most heinous.
The three were caught on camera committing the offences thus prompting the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko to act.
Sicily further commended the DPP for following up the matter after the video went viral on social media platforms.
“Gender-based violence remains one of the pervasive human rights violations in Kenya today. This heinous crime reflects and reinforces between men and women and compromises the health, dignity, security and autonomy of its victims,” The cs said in a statement.
