North Mugirango MP Charles Geni has demanded that President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto addresses the plight of Internally Displaced Persons during their maiden visit to Nyamira on Wednesday.
Hundreds of IDPs are still languishing in poverty at Ekerenyo where the country’s top leadership is expected to address a public rally.
However, Geni on Wednesday protested the president’s itinerary saying it secluded IDPs despite the leaders’ efforts to have them in cooperated.
“I want to challenge the president and his team to consider giving money for resettlement of IDPs. These people have stayed in camps for long, since 2008 and the only money they received is just Sh10,000,” Geni said during a phone interview.
“As much as we welcome the projects which will be launched, I think it will be fair also if we give these IDPs a reason to smile and the person who is responsible for that is coming. The President must do something over this,” he added.
Similar calls were echoed by Women Representative Alice Chae, who urged Jubilee government to expedite resettlement process of the IDPs given the ongoing rains in the region.
“The rains have made things difficult for them and it’s my wish that the president will take his time to address the issue and ensure resettlement is expedited. We want to see people given justice and that is through compensating them,” she said in her official Facebook page.
All Nyamira leaders are expected to have a closed door meeting with President Kenyatta and DP William Ruto at the county headquarters on Wednesday morning.
