Controversial North Mugirango MP Charles Geni’s days in Orange Democratic Movement may be numbered, after the party’s youth league was reportedly reaching out Nyamira County speaker to challenge him in the 2017 party primaries.
Geni, who also doubles as ODM Nyamira branch secretary on Friday thrilled mourners at former area MP Geoffrey Masanya’s funeral when he literally took off with the microphone when a charged crowd booed him in his attempts to address them.
According to one of the youth league leader who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, they party was considering speaker Joash Nyamoko as a viable alternative.
“I want to confirm that as youth league leader, we are not happy with the manner he is working, not only in his constituency but also at the county level. We do not want to lose this seat and if we just watch him handling things the way he wants, then ODM risks losing the seat,” said the source.
“We have reached the speaker in two occasions and the gesture is promising. We want Geni subjected to party primaries and through our ground research, the speaker will carry the day,” added the source.
The source revealed that the MP had dissociated himself from electorates, and vowed that the youth league team was determined to ensure he is not the party’s flag bearer.
“We cannot condone a flag bearer who is unpopular because his people are complaining of underdevelopment. As youth team, we see Nyamoko as an ideal flag bearer but that is also subject to nominations which we are very hopeful that he will carry the day,” said the source.
Nyamoko lost to Geni in ODM 2013 primaries before moving to LPK where he lost narrowly to the incumbent by a relatively small margin.
