Some 300 vulnerable households in Nakuru West constituency have received foodstuff worth Ksh.2 Million from the social support kitty of the Live and Learn in Kenya (LLK) education foundation run by German and American missionaries in Nakuru.
In the spirit of sharing during the festive season, the families with a total of 460 children sponsored by the German philanthropic Organization also received bedding and personal effects from the organization which seeks to empower the African child to pursue a dream through quality education.
The Program`s manager Kenneth Branda said the organization is committed to encouraging more than 6,000 families in the area that rely on sand quarries for livelihoods to educate their children who he says are often used as laborers by their poor parents in sand mines at the expense of schooling.
“The food and non-food stuff initiative is a component of the free school feeding program in the area that is aimed at scaling up retention in school and completion rates among children born to needy households,” said the manager.
At the close of the year ceremony at the LLK Education canter in Barut yesterday, Branda said the foundation has also begun receiving applications for sponsorship of needy but bright children who completed their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education this year for enrolment in Secondary schools of their choice.
It is against an unsettling backdrop of low rates in enrolment and retention in school among children in Barut area of Nakuru West that stakeholders are intervening with incentives and sustained public awareness programs seeking to encourage quarry workers in the area to prioritize education for their children.
