The German government has sponsored the construction of three schools in Kisumu city to the tune of Sh 472 million in the third phase of their sponsorship.
Kisumu City manager Doris Ombara said the construction will be done at Kasagam secondary school, Migosi and Bar Union primary schools.
Ombara said the construction will include putting up modern classrooms, laboratories, dining halls, libraries, administration blocks and playing fields.
“We are talking about 16 classrooms and 4 laboratories at Kasagam secondary school, 43 classrooms at Migosi primary school and another 18 classrooms at Bar Union primary school,” she said.
Ombara said the sites have been identified and contract awarded to two international contractors who are expected to commence construction any time.
Speaking at Kasagam secondary school, the city manager said the contractors are expected to hand over the schools within two and a half years.
Ombara further announced that talks are on progress to have local contractors’ sub-contracted but must maintain the quality works. She said local contractors have in the past been involved in shoddy works that resulted into collapse of some buildings.
“Our local contractors must benefit but they must be ready to produce quality works or else they will find no place. The German Government is keen to ensure there funds are used prudently,” she said.
She cited two schools that were funded by the German government in the second phase and left unfinished after the local contractors abandoned the works.
Ombara said this forced the German Government to raise the procurement rules for the re-tendering of the completion of those two schools.
