West Mugirango MP James Gesami has warned President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Jubilee Party against using Chief Justice nominee David Maraga as a campaign tool in Gusii region.
On Thursday, the Judicial Service Commission nominated Justice Maraga who hails from Nyamira County for the position of Chief Justice pending approval by the National Parliament and subsequent appointment by the President.
But Gesami insists that Justice Maraga’s nomination was purely based on merit and warned the government against using his name in their campaigns in the region.
“I have heard some Jubilee campaigners from Gusii region chest thumping that Jubilee was behind the nomination of Maraga as CJ. That is an outdated campaign tool that the President should caution his spanner boys from engaging in,”said Gesami on Sunday in his Simbauti home.
“The President and his supporters know that the JSC competitively chose Maraga based on his merit. We cannot allow the government to hoodwink Gusii people that the nomination is a reward to the community. Maraga worked hard to get the position,” he added.
Gesami accused President Uhuru's regime of allegedly sidelining the Gusii region by failing to improve tea and coffee sectors apart from questioning the slow pace of infrastructural development.
“We grow tea and coffee but the government has been hell bent on boosting farmers unlike from other regions. Our roads are in bad shape but the government has remained mum over the same. They cannot hide in Maraga’s appointment because we are past cheap politics,” he said.
