Students from Nyasimwamu primary school in Gesima ward have a reason to smile after area MCA promised to build two new classrooms that had collapsed following heavy rains in the recent months.

Speaking on Monday at Nyabuya area, Mr Ken Atuti of Gesima ward said the construction of the two classrooms will start immediately since lower primary students were compelled to use one class after the incident.

Mr Atuti accused the area MP of failing to respond in time despite having reported to him about a month ago.

“I am really saddened that our children are learning in a congested classroom following the tragedy. I have ordered construction of a new classroom and that will take effect immediately. I had reported the matter to (Kitutu Masaba MP) Timothy Bosire but nothing has been done yet,” he said.

He urged the national government to execute its mandate since education is not a devolved function but promised to persuade the county government to refurbish many schools from the region that are said to be in a poor state.

“The government must be ready to work hard and execute its mandate. Education is not yet developed. However, I will ensure all institution which are in a poor state are refurbished as soon as possible since the county government has promised to facilitate that,” he said.

The school’s deputy headteacher, Mr Alfred Momanyi, welcomed the move but blamed the Ministry of Education for failing to rectify the situation in time.

“Our children have lost a lot since the tragedy. The Ministry has been a bit slow but as a school we are very grateful to our MCA,” he said.
