Candidates from primary schools in Gesima Ward, Nyamira County have not been severely affected by the teachers’ strike.
School heads from the region have resulted to hiring trained and untrained teachers to stand in for the striking teachers to help prepare candidates for this years’ KCPE exams.
Speaking on Tuesday at Kebuko Primary School, KEPSHA Gesima Zone Chairman Mr Charles Bosire said the move was reached after the government failed to resolve the stalemate in time.
“We have candidates to prepare and the government has taken long to agree with KNUT to have teachers back. We had to settle on using the minimum resources we get from the national government to hire teachers for the sake of children,” he said.
He said the association was ready to defend its decision of using the kitty that is powered by the government to pay teachers that were hired.
“I know soon after the strike is over some of our schools will be put to task by the ministry about the spending of the little we get from the government for development and running of our schools. We are ready to defend our move because it was the only alternative,” he added.
Each school hired three teachers and this means at least 54 teachers are hired in the 18 primary schools in the zone with each expected to be paid Sh7,000 a month with each candidate required to pay Sh500 and the school topping up the rest.
