Residents of Gesima location in Kitutu Masaba constituency will be required to attend community work every Friday in a bid to open feeder roads that are no longer in use, the area chief has said.

Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting with community leaders and village elders from the location, Mr James Ogeto said community work was part of the administrative policies and all heads of the family were required to send a representative or pay a fee that could pay people who will show up to open the roads.

He said the move will drastically reduce cases on insecurity in the region besides giving residents access to transportation of their farm products.

“We don’t have to wait for the government or county government to open up these community roads. Many of them have become forested hence becoming a hideout for criminal gangs. The roads will further enable residents to transport their farm products easily,” he said.

Mr Ogeto defended the directive saying it was practiced during the times of retired President Daniel Moi besides being a policy in the East African State of Rwanda.

“This isn’t a new policy. It has been used over times in the country and is currently being used in Rwanda. It will help us to be responsible citizens and that is why every family hold will be required to send one representative,” he added.

The move was unanimously supported by a section of residents who termed is as ‘remedy’ to transport crisis in the tea farming zone.
