Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has asked the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to take decisive measures and ensure brutal acts by police on innocent Kenyans stop.
Mr Moi said the work of the police is to protect Kenyans and not to assault them.
The Kanu Chairman was responding to a Monday incident in which Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto was allegedly hit by a police tear gas canister as he intervened to quell riots pitting two youth groups during a football match at Silibwet in Bomet County.
"I was shocked by the police brutality meted out on the Bomet governor HE Isaac Rutto," Mr Moi said on his official Facebook account.
"It is unfortunate that the police, who are meant to protect the lives of the public, are the same ones assaulting them."
During the incident, two youth groups- one said to be allied to Mr Ruto and the other allied to Parliament Deputy Speaker Joyce Laboso clashed.
Reports indicated police who intervened to calm the situation arrested youth allied to Mr Ruto compelling the governor to intervene.
It was during the fracas that a police officer allegedly threw a tear gas canister hitting the county boss on the face.
He was airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment before being transferred to South Africa for further treatment.
Mr Ruto is opposed to Deputy President William Ruto's leadership in Rift Valley.
He has for the last two years remained the DP's greatest critic in South Rift.
"I call on the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to immediately bring those involved to book," Moi added.
DP Ruto is seeking to contest for the presidency in 2022.
