Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria has accused the Nakuru County government of harassing bodaboda operators saying the trend may force some youth to indulge into crimes.
Speaking on Thursday at Nakuru Town to a group of bodaboda operators, Gikaria called for the removal of a court he claims is located in the county's headquarters which has been responsible for charging bodaboda operators.
Gikaria termed the court as "illegal and unconstitutional" and blamed it for all troubles facing bodaboda operators.
Gikaria said that a number of bodaboda operators have abandoned their operations due to harassment.
“Whenever a bodaboda operator is arrested, he is charged Sh4,000 or Sh10,000 which is beyond his reach,” said Gikaria.
The legislator said that the bodaboda industry is crucial in youth empowerment and said the county government had made it unattractive to youth.
“Bodaboda operators have been arrested for petty offences where their bikes are held till they pay hefty fines,” said Gikaria.
Gikaria has also ruffled feathers with Kinuthia's administration after he was charged before a Nakuru court with disposing waste in undesignated areas in Nakuru Town.
He called for mutual dialogue between the concerned parties to address the issue of bodaboda operators and save the industry from collapsing.
