Nakuru East Member of Parliament David Gikaria has called for investigations into Sh15 million allegedly set aside by the Nakuru County government to address cholera.
The call comes amidst claims by the county government that they were yet to determine the amount used to treat cholera which has so far claimed 16 lives with 207 under treatment.
Gikaria lamented that the county was unable to handle the disease, citing that devolvement of the health sector was costing many Kenyans their lives.
According to Gikaria, such tragedies would only take two days to control unlike the current situation.
“Where else has the health department taken three weeks to combat a disease?” he asked.
He demanded that the county treats all the sewer lines and develop a proper waste management.
And in a rejoinder, Nakuru chief of Health Samuel Mwaura insisted that the Sh15 million was exaggerated saying they would only know the cumulative figure that has been used to treat the disease once it is declared a cholera free county.
According to Mwangi, Mama Ngina Primary School today had a cholera scare that turned out to be food poisoning
Mwangi said that they had now set up an emergency treatment centre at Mogotio Hhospital to deal with cases reported in the area.
At the same time, Gikaria wants former councillors to be pensioned by the government.
He has appealed to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to allocate them their retirement benefits and a pension since they had served their country.
Gikaria said that they would push SRC to have them get their retirement package once their term in office expired.
He was speaking during the distribution of Sh9.6 million Uwezo funds.
The outspoken MP expressed concern that the councillors were being neglected by the State yet they had played an important role in the shaping of the country’s history.
He urged the government to take good care of the retired government employees since they have no means of a livelihood.
