Different groups of Gikuyu elders drawn from across the country converged for a national meeting in Nakuru on Saturday to forge unity ahead of the 2017 polls.

Groups that were represented included Mount Kenya Council of Elders, Kiama Kia Maa, Gikuyu Council of Elders, GEMA and Rift Valley Council of Elders. 

The meeting which was held at Kunste Hotel deliberated on forming an umbrella body for all the organisations. 

Kikuyu Council of Elders Organising Secretary James Ng’ang’a said that the merger will help unite the community before reaching to other communities. 

"We need to unite the house before reaching others. We want to lay proper structures to approach our issues," he said.
