Death toll from an accident that occurred at Kikopey in Gilgil on Monday night has risen to six people.

Two people died on the spot, three died while undergoing treatment at St. Mary’s mission hospital while one died at Nakuru Level 5 hospital early Tuesday.

Addressing media on Tuesday, Gilgil OCPD Sarah Koki said that after the accident occurred all casualties were taken to St Mary’s hospital before they were later referred to Nakuru Level 5 hospital.

"The accident involved an 11-sitter North Rift Shuttle matatu, six Lorries and a small parastatal vehicle. All the vehicles were headed towards Nakuru from Nairobi when the matatu was hit from behind causing a pile up collusion,” said the OCPD.

Meanwhile, four survivors are nursing injuries at Nakuru Level 5 hospital while one has been transferred to Mediheal hospital.

All the vehicles involved in the accident are currently at Gilgil police station.

According to OCPD Koki, the accident occurred after one lorry developed brake failure and as a result hit the matatu from the rear hence the multiple crash.

The police boss called on drivers to be extra careful especially at night.
