The 75-acre piece of land, which they claim was given to them by the late former cabinet minister Njenga Karume, is now on the verge of being grabbed by a local prominent businessman and a politician.

The residents, from Kamathatha village in Gilgil, are therefore pleading for help to get the ownership of the said land which may otherwise end in the hands of the tycoon.

Over 600 youths who rely on sand harvesting for survival on this piece of land are among those set to be evicted after they were served with a notice.

Following the notice, the residents yesterday held peaceful demonstrations and vowed that they will not move from the land they have settled for over 30 years.

Group chairman Sospeter Mwangangi ascertained that the late cabinet minister allocated them the land and the alleged grabber’s intentions are only veered towards oppressing them.

“Karume gave this land to us over 30 years ago. The land was a total of 75 acres, 25 of which were allocated to a primary school. Some people are after it and we therefore call upon relevant persons to assist us,” Mwangangi said.

The families are now calling upon the lands Ministry and the National lands Commission to intercede and ensure justice to the families affected.
