The over 200 operators accused traffic police officers for the harassment and demanding bribes even for those who have complied with the traffic rules.

They said police officers have even extended their powers by slapping and hitting those who try to resist giving them bribes.

"We urged the Ethics and Anti Corruption officials to tour the area and see what is happening here,” Moses Gitonga a driver with NAGIL Sacco said.

He noted that the officers are always on roads not to maintain law and order but to extort money from poor operators.

"The officers are always on road to scoop money from us, not to maintain law and order," said Gironga.

He said their employers are blaming them for stealing from them but the police are the ones who steal a great deal from the matatu operators.
