Gilgil Constituency MP Nderitu Mathenge wants youths from the Constituency to take up farming as a venture and help reduce rising unemployment.
Addressing youths when he toured Gilgil town on Tuesday, MP Mathenge challenged youths to embrace farming, saying that there is real money in agriculture.
He noted that youths from other areas across the country have seen the potential in farming and are reaping big money from farming.
“Young people should stop this mindset of wanting to be employed in white collar jobs and instead take up farming as an alternative way of getting money,” said Mathenge.
The MP reminded the youths that farming is the backbone of Nakuru’s economy hence the need for youths to venture into it to be part of those benefitting from the activity.
He urged youths to apply for Uwezo Funds and use the money to start farming ventures.
Mathenge said that Nakuru County government has pledged to support youths who venture into farming. The Gilgil MP blamed negative perceptions that have been long associated with farming.
“Farming was never and is never meant for the old and uneducated people, in real sense youths should know that money is in farming,” said Mathenge.
The MP urged the county government to educate youths on the importance of farming and its role in fighting poverty.
He also called for forums where youths will get ideas from experts about farming for them to change their perception and embrace the farming sector.
