Residents of Kasambara village in Gilgil have blamed police laxity after six cows that had been stolen were found slaughtered in a nearby thicket.
According to Elizabeth Gathuo, the owner of the cows, a group of men raided her home at around 1:00 am and brought down a section of the barn where she had locked up the animals.
Gathuo blamed dubious butchers in the area over the incident.
“Such heinous incidents have been common in recent weeks and we are just wondering how the cartel is always out smarting police officers in the area yet the police post is sufficiently equipped to protect lives and properties of citizens,” Gathuo said.
Gathuo, who lost three cows, said more than 50 have been stolen in the area.
Njoki Wachira is another victim.
“Upon response to peculiar movements in the homesteads, villagers spotted the culprits slaughtering the cows and when they raised alarm the thieves took some of the meat and drove away in a Toyota station wagon car,” Wachira said.
George Wanjuje, urged police to intensify night patrols and also bring to book the thieves.
