A stray Hippo from Lake Naivasha was shot dead by the Kenya Wildlife Society officers near Gilgil Weighbridge.
The incident caused a major traffic jam on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.
According to an eye witness, Jane Wambui, the hippo was loitering along the highway and could charge at individuals and vehicles.
"It is as if it wanted to hit the vehicle whenever it saw one coming. It was very risky and would have caused many accidents had it not been for it being shot,” Wambui said.
She said that the police were forced to call the KWS officers who had no other alternative apart from shooting and killing it.
"It looks like they were unable to capture it alive and hence they killed it,” Wambui said.
Peter Kinuthia who stays around the area said that they all benefited from the meat.
"This time round they did not stop us from taking the meat. Majority of people even the travellers stopped by to have a piece of the meat,” Kinuthia said.
He called upon the KWS department to ensure that such animals are not allowed to loiter around.
