A Kiambu court has sent a 16-year-old girl to rehabilitation facility located at the Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.

The girl had escaped from Kirigiti rehabilitation centre where she had been committed by the same court last year.

After she was re-arrested, Kiambu Chief Magistrate Patriciah Gichohi committed the girl to Wamae Girls' Borstal Institution located within Kamiti.

The judge sent the girl to the girls correctional facility on Friday, urging her to mind about her future.

"You are a child and the government cares about all children, therefore, I commit you to Wamae Girls' where you will go through school which guarantees you a bright future," judge Gichohi told her.

The girl was placed in Kirigiti rehabilitation centre for two years after she was produced in court as a child in need of care and protection.

She had been arrested for involving herself in truancy incidents when she was a member of a gang in Nairobi involved in drug trafficking.

The court was told the minor would ferry drugs for gang members.

A report presented to the court by a probation officer advised for custodial sentence since the girl is a minor whose mother is deceased.

The report further disclosed her father lives abroad and the girl and her siblings live on their own.
