An international Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) has embarked on a girl child mentorship project targeting schools in Nakuru town. The International Girl Child Protection Scheme (IGCPS) country representative Naryja Marhya told reporters on Wednesday at Jamuhuri Primary School in Nakuru town that the NGO would fund the programme targeting school girls in major urban centres in the country. Speaking during the launch of the programme, Marhya said they plan to spend Sh10m adding they will collaborate with local stakeholders to facilitate the project. The girl child rights crusader explained that the mentorship programme was born out of the NGO’s objectives that revolve around the prevention of gender discrimination through mentoring and empowering girl children through direct investment and protection of their rights. “This project will not only become a pioneer project but will also build awareness among societies for changing attitudes towards the girl child rights and gender discrimination,’’ she said. The NGO representative noted that all primary schools girl pupils in Nakuru sub county will take part in the mentorship programme that aims at infusing talent, leadership, religious, home economics and academic values among the girls.
