A three-year-old girl died in a grisly road accident involving a motorbike and a lorry in Gatundu south Kiambu County on Monday.
The accident occurred in the mid-morning hours after the bodaboda rider ferrying a woman and her daughter tried to overtake a speeding lorry.
According to an eyewitness, the rider lost control while overtaking the lorry, which was moving at a high speed.
Nicholas Munene, a bodaboda rider who also witnessed the accident, said the driver of the lorry did not give way to the motorcycle. The rider tried to overtake the lorry but he veered off the road near a bend and landed in a ditch.
The girl is reported to have died on the spot.
The rider and the other passenger were immediately taken to hospital where they are nursing injuries.
Gatundu South traffic base commander urged motorists to exercise caution and consideration for other road users especially during this rainy season.
He also emphasised on the need for all bodaboda riders to wear protective clothing as well as provide their passengers with the same.
The commander also warned bodaboda operators against flouting traffic rules.
“Accidents involving motorcycles have been on the rise in the area and across the country which can be attributed to unskilled operators without driving licenses and general flouting of traffic rules including reluctance to wear protective gears which help other road users to identify them,” said the commander.
