Quinter Amondi, 16, was among students taking part in schools’ sporting competition in the county when a stray bullet fired by a prison warder hit her eye.

The prison warder who fired the bullet was said to have been pursuing an inmate on the run.

Ms Amondi’s father Fredrick Ojwando said his daughter was shot at Migori High School where she had gone to represent her school in high school volleyball games.

According to Mr Ojwando, the police said the girl was hit mistakenly since the bullet was fired at a prisoner who had escaped towards Migori High School.

Ojwando also said that the government and the Department of Prisons had never said anything concerning the matter.

He said his daughter was rushed to St Joseph Ombo Mission Hospital where a surgery was done and was later referred to Moi Referral and Teaching Hospital in Eldoret for more specialised medical attention.

Her mother Saline Ojwando said her daughter's face has been damaged.

Both parents called on the government to compensate the girl as she was forced to leave school and is now recuperating at her home in Nairobi.

Governor Okoth Obado’s wife, Helen paid the girl a visit and assured her that she would help push for her compensation.
