More than 1,000 students of Keveye Girls High School have been indefinitely suspended following a night-long unrest and destruction of property at the school.
The unrest also saw four girls sustain injuries and were rushed to the Vihiga County Referral Hospital in Mbale town following a bitter battle with police on Monday night.
The students were demanding the immediate reinstatement of their principal Judith Ngome who was interdicted by TSC over unknown reasons.
According to the Standard, trouble began after Ministry of Education officials convened a Monday meeting where they appointed Deputy Principal Violet Mwale the acting principal and installed an interim Board of Management.
"The parade that had been convened to relay the information suddenly turned chaotic, with some students crying and others shouting they wanted their principal back after the announcement," a teacher said as quoted by the Standard.
"The students had a special attachment with their principal and when they heard she had been interdicted, it didn't just make sense to them," added the teacher.
However, real trouble broke out at 6pm when the students turned chaotic and broke CCTV cameras before attacking the classes and administration block.
Records show that Ms Ngome took the reigns of the school six years ago and turned around fortunes with the mean grade rising from a dismal 5.2 to the 9.6 they registered in the 2015 KCSE exams.
