Harun Kioko says that many accidents are caused by drivers who flout traffic rules.

Speaking at Kibichoi Trading Centre during a free road safety training conducted by NTSA in collaboration with the traffic department, Kioko blamed drivers who are ill-trained and those who drive under the influence of alcohol.

“With re-introduction of breathalyzers, there has been a reduction in road accidents caused by drivers under influence of alcohol,” said Kioko.

Kioko said that NTSA, in collaboration with the police and the judiciary, have put in place measures and strict enforcement to curb road accidents.

He said the introduction of mobile courts which have delivered instant punishments for offenders has borne fruits.

He said, “The fines meted out on the offenders have played a great role in reducing road accidents.”

Constable Benson Kariuki from the traffic department said they are doing everything possible to bring sanity to the roads and hailed NTSA’s efforts to reduce road accidents.

He concluded: “NTSA has done a lot from vehicle registration, driver testing, vehicle licensing, road safety education and carrying out periodic road safety audits. As a result, road fatalities have go down.”
