About 3,000 candidates in Githunguri sub county are sitting for this year’s Kenya Certificate Primary Education that kicked off on Tuesday.

Githunguri, according to figures from the sub county education office indicate the sub county has the highest number of candidates in the county.

According to an education official, 1,519 boys and 1,481 girls in 89 centres joined other candidates across the country to sit for the examinations.

88 centres in the sub county are regular while one is private.

Speaking in his office, Githunguri Sub County Education Officer Harrison Mwaniki said the exam started well and that according to the information from supervisors in all the centres, the exam arrived safely and on time.

“The exams arrived at the centres on time and in good condition, I am in touch with the supervisors from the 89 centres who are briefing me,” Mr Mwaniki said.

He added that in the past years, boys performed better than girls because when it comes to attending day to day classes especially in day schools, most of the girls miss some lessons for various reasons and lag behind the boys in lessons that they do not recover.

“Performance in our sub county differs between the genders because we realise that most of the time, girls are busy with home chores while boys are busy with their studies leading girls to lag behind the boys,” Mwaniki said.

The officer further said Githunguri sub county is commended for an almost equality of gender in the schools because there is a slight difference between the number of boys and that of girls as compared to other sub counties.

He pleaded with the public to continue advocating for the girl-child education.
