Githurai 45 member of county assembly has warned bar owners to keep off from selling alcohol packed in plastic bottles in an effort to curb the vice of alcohol indulgence among the youth.
Speaking in Githurai 45, Paul Chege cautioned the residents against the consumption of alcohol with poor packaging and branding since some of the brewers are not certified and some brands do not follow the proper liquor brewing procedures required.
Chege added that brewers packing liquor in plastic bottles were doing so to reduce their production costs and in turn this attracts the youth due to the cheap prices on these brands.
“The youth prefer to buy this liquor due to its cheap pricing and end up being alcoholics not promoting to the county’s agenda which is catered on building the economy. In turn the youth shy away from being job creators to mere drunks,” said Chege.
According to the county assembly official, alcohol related deaths witnessed in the country over the past few months have a close relation to some of this poorly packed brands with phony names, something that has claimed the lives of many people in the country and the biggest percentage of the affected being the youth.
He reiterated that bar owners should concert their efforts towards making sure distributors of such brands are not tolerated and should join hands to fight off the sale of uncertified brands infiltrating the liquor industry.
Chege mentioned that a few months ago the plastic packed alcohol was slapped by a ban, but recently tables have turned and the alcohol is slowly finding its way back to the bars.
He said that the Kenya Bureau of Standards should look into these cheap liquor brewing factories blossoming in the country and force them to adhere to the stipulated ethical guideline by the Liquor Licensing Board.
He adds that the lawmakers and enforcers should take a firm stand and crackdown on unscrupulous brewers who are violating the regulations of alcohol consumption in the country.
