Kisumu Medical and Education Trust Coordinator Carolyne Nyandat noted that the number of early childhood pregnancies in Kisumu is on the rise, with most of the victims being between ages 14 to 19 years.

Speaking to this writer on Monday at KMET offices, the Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) worker challenged parents to give guidance to their daughters, to help reduce the rising number.

“We are not asking parents to be too strict on their daughters but to allow them to interact with their male counterparts so that they could know how to handle such interactions,” said Nyandat.

“Research study conducted by KMET in the last fourteen months revealed that most of the girls getting pregnant at early ages come from extremely strict backgrounds with very strict families,” added Nyandat.

She further asked parents to be free and talk about issues related to sexual health with their daughters, to equip them with the basic knowledge on how to interact with men responsibly.

She said that the only way cases of early teenage pregnancies and abortions could be reduced was through parents providing guidance to their growing daughters.
