Deputy President William Ruto Monday asked the department of immigration to speed up the processing of identification cards to the large number of pastoral communities ahead of the 2017 general elections.
Speaking in Garsen where he was inspecting the Garsen Technical Training Institute alongside launching an agricultural mechanisation programme in Tana River constituency, the DP said that it indeed is a right of every Kenyan citizen to be issued with an ID card once they attain the age of 18.
Ruto further appealed to the communities that have ever since been warring to shun traditional practices that have been a stumbling block to education in the region and take their children to school.
He also asked the Tana River region leaders to uphold the status quo in the region and strive to safeguard the gains achieved in reconciling the now at peace communities.
“The responsibility to ensure we build bridges of brotherhood, friendship and unity between all the tribes and religions so that we can live as a people of one united nation is ours as leaders," he added.
