Main entrance to Eldoret Women Prison [Photo: nation.co.ke]The Judiciary has been asked to put in place measures that will see petty women offenders subjected to alternative sentencing other than serving a jail term.The Sisters of Comfort, an Eldoret based nongovernmental organization says this will enable the women, mainly mother's take care of their children while on non-custodial sentence.Speaking after visiting the Eldoret Women prison on Sunday, the organization's founder Rose Kisama lamented that many of the women are forced to take care of their young children in prisons under harsh conditions."Some of the women come in jail while pregnant and when they give birth they face a lot of challenges among them lack of beddings and clothing among others as the young born have not been taken care of," Kisama said."This why we are advocating for those with petty offenders to be given non-custodial sentence for the good of the child," she added.Kisama, a former nominated MCA at the Uasin Gishu County Assembly further challenged other well-wishers to visit women in prison during this festive season.During the visit, the over 100 women inmates were given Christmas presents ranging from food, clothing for those with kids and other basic needs.*Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Uasin Gishu County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
