A section of Maasai leaders have urged President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto to support Alex ole Magelo to retain his position as the Nairobi County Assembly speaker.
The Maa leaders led by Kajiado Governor Joseph Lenku and former Senator Peter Mositet said the move will be in appreciation of the support the community gave Jubilee in the just-concluded general election.
They also stated that Magelo had brought order and dignity to the county assembly.
“We officially plead with President Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto to consider us for the Nairobi speaker’s position again. Our candidate will continue fostering peace and unity among the MCAs,” said Lenku as quoted by the Nation.
He made the remarks Friday when he was sworn in as governor in Kajiado town.
The daily added that Magelo has reached out to the members of county assembly as individuals, but noted that that the party leadership will choose a candidate when the right time comes.
“The party will decide. I hope I’ll be the party’s choice. I worked tirelessly to ensure I unified the heavily divided assembly,” he said.
The Nairobi speaker’s post has attracted several candidates from both the JP and NASA sides, although Jubilee has an advantage of numbers in the assembly.
