Nairobi county's striking doctors have said that they will not resume work unless the county government moves in to provide them with 'fare to work'.
This comes after City Hall had promised to clear their salary arrears and provide them with vouchers to offset their financial burdens and in return asked the medics to return to work starting Friday last week.
According to The Nation, however, the medics said they had not received any of the vouchers the county government was talking about.
Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists' Union Nairobi branch Secretary General Thuranira Kaugiria revealed that they had only heard of the said vouchers through the media and that their pay had not been done.
He added that the doctors had not reported back at work because they had no fare to pay to work.
“We are not defying the court order, we just don’t have fare to commute to work or food to eat in our houses. Are we going to walk?” asked Dr Kaugiria.
The doctors are striking in protest of delayed salaries, unmade promotions and what they say is failure by the county government to remit statutory deductions like NSSF and NSSF fees accrued in the last eight months.
