A group of women from Kitutu Masaba in Nyamira County have asked national assembly budget committee to set aside funds for women representatives in a bid to have them work efficiently for the group which they represent in parliament.
Speaking on Sunday at Mochenwa market, they defended area women representative Alice Chae from scathing attacks from the public, saying all women reps do not have special funds for the purpose of executing development in the local areas.
They said if the Mutava Musimi-led committee set aside the funds, the move will see the 47 women representatives initiate developmental activities to those whom they represent.
“The budget committee should ensure that women reps have a special kitty that will enable them execute their mandate. This will be essential especially for the women of this country,” said Tabitha Mokaya.
“We all understand that they are using their salaries to traverse their area of representation which should not be the case. This is why giving them some fund is very crucial,” she said.
Currently, only elected MPs are allowed to lead the CDF kitty, which might be scrapped after being declared null and void by the court earlier this year.
The 47 women representatives who were chosen after enacting of the Kenyan constitution in 2010 allowed the formation of the aforementioned group as a way of dealing with gender equality in parliament.
