Homa Bay Women Representative Gladys Wanga has revealed that she has been receiving a lot of pressure from the public ever since she commented on the MPs pay cut.In July, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) led by Sarah Serem reduced the salary for MPs and Senators from Sh710,000 to Sh 621,000, and further scrapped the Sh5,000 sitting allowances paid to members for attending each plenary session.Wanga who is a member of the outgoing PSC team said on Wednesday that the new pay for MPs was meant to reduce them to beggars adding that legislators will not accept anything less than the package MPs in the eleventh Parliament were taking home. Her sentiments were criticised by a section of Kenyans and political leaders who termed the lawmakers as 'greedy' leaders. The ODM legislator has however defended herself saying she did not comment in bad faith.Speaking in Homa Bay County on Friday, she added that her sentiments were in line with Kenyans' well-being.“I gave my opinion about the salary cut but people are giving me a lot of pressure. I did not make the comment in bad taste because I know the importance of MPs earning more,” she said as quoted by the Star.“A lot of money which remains at the national level elicits many scandals in the national government. Giving us desirable salaries will ensure our electorate also benefit," she added.
