Mutua said 'big' names implicated in the counterfeit and contraband trade must be arrested and prosecuted.

According to Mutua, unless the big cartles are arrested and prosecuted, contraband products will continue to exist in the Kenyan market.

"The government must go for the big names if it wants to end counterfeits trade and corruption," Mutua said.

Mutua said arresting and prosecuting 'small fish' will not end corruption.

"We want to see big fish being arrested and taken to court for their role in counterfeit trade and corruption," he added.

Mutua spoke during an interview with a local daily on Saturday.

He said contraband trade allegedly being overseen by prominent politicians has 'killed' genuine businesses.

Mutua said anyone who engages in counterfeit trade is an enemy of the people.

He asked the government to continue with the crackdown on contraband sugar and other products across the country.

On Friday, police arrested Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) Managing Director Charles Ongwae and other officials over the contraband sugar that is being seized across the country.

According to Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji, Ongwae and others will be arraigned and charged in court on Monday.

There are reports that the contraband sugar has laces of mercury, copper, and lead.
