He said some diseases which are very dangerous can be treated when detected early.

"It's sad that Kenyans shy away from checkups and they only visit the doctor when the situation is chronic," he said.

Speaking during a press conference at the hospital Dr Aruasa said diseases such as cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes once discovered early can be treated.

He added that the hospital is conducting a one-week eye camp where patients with eye problems will be checked and treated free of charge.

"The exercise which started on Monday has seen 670 patients with eye problem screened while 200 have been operated on at a very subsided rate," he said.

He said the exercise which is sponsored by MTRH and Moi University will run until August 1, and urged Kenyans to turn up in large numbers for them to be screened and treated.

"There are many people suffer from eye problems but they don't know where to get medicine, they should come and will be advised on what to do," he said.

He added, the major cause of blindness is cataract and can be prevented and if infected can be cured.

"Normal costs for eye surgery is Sh5,000 only and with NHIF card, it will cater for your treatment but now is subsidized, I call upon individuals over 45 years to go for medical examination since they are at risk to face eye complications," he added.
