US Ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec has said that the US will work closely with Coast based human rights organization to enhance the fight against extremism among youth in the region.

Speaking at Kwale, after he attended the Law Society of Kenya annual general meeting, held this week at Leisure lodge hotel in Diani, Kwale County, Godec said that though the problem was being slowly tamed compared to the year 2014 and 2015, there was need for joint more efforts.

Godec said that most young people who had earlier joined militia groups and terrorized locals have changed and rejoined their families after the extension of government amnesty.

"I think we need to supplement the efforts being done by the Kenyan government by ensuring the youths empowerment programs are enhanced,” he said.

“We should all venture into empowering the youth in the region so that they do not join militia or terror groups the whole situation has caused a lot of pain among the Coastal community” he added.

Recently, the Coast regional coordinator Nelson Marwa said that Mombasa, Kwale and Lamu were the affected counties by extremism though he said that more youths were now surrendering to police for assistance.
