Reports of the availability of gold and silver along the river of Kanyiriri in Naivasha’s Maraigushu area have led to the flocking of miners in the area in the hope of literally striking gold.
However, Naivasha MP John Kihagi has refuted the claims, saying that the excavators are part of a broad scheme by some senior people in government.
Kihagi said that as the excavators go on with their activities in the caves, they are polluting Kanyiriri river, which is used by more than 3,000 people.
He has asked the government to intervene and stop the exercise immediately.
“We are very angry at these excavators who came here after they heard there were treasures in this place,” said the irate legislator.
“It is annoying to know that government officials are also involved, the same people who should be custodians of public resources.”
He urged those involved to suspend the exercise with immediate effect and consult with the area residents before proceeding any further.
Some of the excavators have claimed to have the necessary expertise to mine the treasures with one saying they acquired the expertise from a German excavator. He said that their analyses gave enough evidence that the area had the treasures.
