Learning in public universities is set to resume, 15 days after lecturers kicked off their strike, early this month, demanding for a pay hike.
This follows an agreement that the lecturers are set to sign with the government, through the Ministry of Education.
The government has agreed to release Sh5.2 billion to finalise the implementation of dons' 2013-2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), that was signed on March 13, 2017, which saw a 54-day strike which started on January 13, come to an end.
The CBA which offers lecturers a 17.5 per cent increase in basic salaries and a 3.9 per cent rise in house allowances across the board, was to take effect July 1, but failed, leading to the strike, that paralysed learning in public universities across the country.Through the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) secretary general Charles Mukhwaya, lecturers had warned that they would accept nothing short of Sh10 billion channeled at once in their bank accounts, after government released Sh4.7 billion, so as to implement the CBA in faces.
