Anytime when a life is lost regardless of the circumstance, we as human beings rush to console with the family. Without asking more questions.
Yesterday, four Gor Mahia Football Club fans lost their lives after the bus they were traveling in was involved in a road accident along Mombasa Road at Mlolongo in Machakos County. The four men were hanging on the vehicle's doors while others sited on its carrier at the time of incident.
We cannot prevent God’s time, but I always think some deaths are avoidable.
Look at it this way, now a fan who was inside the bus seated was not seriously injured. This tells you straight away that the accident was not vital and if every passenger was seated and safety belts on as is required by the traffic laws, we could not be reporting any death in this accident.
Sometimes it becomes sad and heartbreaking when people die in situations they could have avoided. It even gets some of us confused on whether to mourn with the aggrieved or just wish they could have done the right thing before death struck.
The four Gor Mahia fans lost their lives out of ignorance, it is simply ignorance which was brought by fanaticism excitement. Nothing else.
What amazes me the most is that, that road has traffic officers every time and it is so obvious that the bus passed police officers with the fans hanging on the vehicle before the incident occurred.
This accident should, however, come as a lesson that we can always avoid most deaths caused on the road due to flouting traffic rules.
We should not be talking of passengers boarding on the carrier of a matatu at the 21st century. Let people take caution and love themselves more when traveling. Let our lives and safety come first when on board.
