Gor Mahia drew 1-1 with Esperance in the finals of the Africa Cup Winners in 1987, although they went ahead to win the Cup for the first time on away goals rule following their 2-2 draw in Tunis.

The two teams met again in the Champions League in 2014 when Esperance beat them 3-2 in Nairobi and 5-0 in Tunis.

Gor had hoped to break the jinx this time around and despite dominating the game they failed to break the deadlock.

Gor meets Esperance in Tunis in 10 days time hoping for a win or 1-1 and above draw to qualify for the second round.

A win in the second round will see them qualify for the group stage and guaranteed Sh55 million in participation fee.

Gor Mahia coach Dylan Kerr said his team would have emerged winners but missed chances cost them. He exuded the confidence of upsetting the form book in Tunis.
