Kenya Premier League giants Gor Mahia narrowly beat South Africa’s Supersport United 1-0 in a CAF-Confederation match at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos on Sunday.
Rwandan international Jacques Tuyisenge scored the only goal that made fans proud, with the visitors’ efforts to find ana equaliser proving futile.
The team now has hopes of advancing to the next stage if it manages a draw in the return leg against their rival in South Africa.
South African veteran winger Thuso Phala was among the players who gave Gor Mahia side a tough moment after he evidently outwitted Philemon Otieno.
Phala almost scored in the ninth minute after he delivered a long shot, forcing Gor custodian Boniface Oluoch to parry for a corner kick. Luke Gareth Roux, Siyabonga Nhlapho, and Sipho Mbule were spitting fire as Gor Mahia defense attempted by all means to contain them.
Gor lost the chance to score in the 19th after Francis Kahata passed the ball to the unmarked Odhiambo, but he failed to connect it to the back of the net.
In the 28th minute, Tuyisenge tried to break through the defense of the South African side but his efforts were thwarted by Nhlapo, forcing him to settle for a corner kick.
Ghanian Richard Boateng kept Gor waiting longer after he cleared the ball from the danger zone.
